The City of Fairfax is an independent city forming an enclave within FairfaxCounty. Although politically independent of the surrounding county, the City is the county seat. Beginning in June 2005, Old Town Fairfax has undergone an ectensive redevelopment. The redevelopment added a new Fairfax City Regional Library, over 45,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, over 70,000 square feet of office condominiums, and 85 upscale residential condominium units.
Annual events in Fairfax include the Chocolate Lovers Festival, Spotlight on the Arts, National Trails Day, Independence Day Celebration Parade and Evening Show, Irish Festival, Fall for the Book Festival, Fall Festival, Blenheim Civil War Encampment/Historic Homes Tour, The Holiday Craft Show, and Festival of Lights. The bus system in the City of Fairfax is largely served by the CUE bus system. The buses run between GeorgeMasonUniversity, the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU metro station, and other locations within or just outside of the City of Fairfax.
